Mitigating Utility Wildfire Risk using Remote Sensing and GIS
Overhead electrical facilities coming in to contact with vegetation poses a significant risk to starting wildfires, especially in high fire prone areas. Using remote sensing/LiDAR data and 3D GIS analysis, GIS Surveyors, Inc (GSi) has developed a process for California utilities to identify where this risk potential is greatest and quantify the risk at a span level to focus mitigation efforts through undergrounding and targeted vegetation.
